‘Jai Bhim,’ chants PM on Ambedkar anniversary – Times of India

LUCKNOW: With the campaigning for Lok Sabha elections hitting a feverish pitch, the birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar on Sunday gave political parties an opportunity to claim legacy of the dalit icon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led top political leaders in paying rich tributes to Ambedkar.

PM Modi tweeted after visiting the Ambedkar Memorial in New Delhi: “Samvidhan nirmata aur samajik nyay ke praneta Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar ko unki jayanti par naman. Jai Bhim! (Homage to BR Ambedkar, the maker of Constitution and the promulgator of social justice, on his birth anniversary. Jai Bhim!)” At a rally in Moradabad, later in the day, he said that it’s the strength of Babasaheb’s Constitution that a chaiwala is the PM. At another rally in Kathua, Modi paid tributes to Ambedkar and raised the ‘Jai Bhim’ slogan before starting his speech.

‘Jai Bhim’ is the favourite slogan of Dalit outfits — from BSP to Bhim Army — who idolise Ambedkar.

BSP chief Mayawati also paid homage to Ambedkar and greeted his followers while seeking votes to ensure that his struggle for humanity is carried forward and his ideals are attained. She also termed BJP chief Amit Shah’s statement that BSP remembers Ambedkar only during elections as “completely false and mischievous”. She claimed that BSP takes inspiration from Ambedkar every day and works for the welfare of all communities.

UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath hailed Ambedkar as a great ‘nationalist’ who was against the division of the country. He paid homage at the Ambedkar Mahasabha office in Lucknow and warned people against forces seeking to divide the country on caste lines. Yogi attacked the previous Samajwadi Party regime for stopping the scholarship of Dalit students. In a veiled attack on Congress, Yogi said that some people “conspired against Ambedkar and established institutions and memorials in the name of one particular family”. RSS said that Ambedkar believed that liberty was meaningless without fraternity and equality.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeted: “On Babasaheb Ambedkar’s jayanti, let us re-dedicate ourselves to the universal values of justice, liberty, equality & fraternity enshrined in our Constitution. Those who pay him tributes, while insidiously weakening these values, do his memory disservice.” SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said that Ambedkar and Ram Manohar Lohia together dreamt of social equality. He also flagged off ‘Veer Samman Yatra’, saying that the SP-BSP alliance was working to realise Ambedkar’s dream of social equality.
